Introduction Post

May 9, 2023

Hello! Welcome! My name is Anne and welcome to my blog! This will be a place for me to talk about my academics, my travels, and the day to day. I'll start out with a little introduction-

  • As of this fall I will be starting a masters program in Medieval Studies at Swansea University in Wales!
I'm super excited for this, I grew up traveling quite a bit and after so long in one place I've been itching to get moving again. Swansea is such a god location, close to the water and only an hour from London. I know I'll be busy with academics but I'm also planning plenty of weekend trips and things to do on breaks.

  • By the end of this month I'll be graduating with a dual bachelors in history and art history.
I double majored in history and art history, and I got a minor in Renaissance studies too! I really love the way that the topics can play into each other and how one can be used to help analyze the other. I did my undergraduate thesis in history on the War of the Roses, looking specifically at women who were involved and how they participated in and affected the conflict. My art history thesis was on Hans Holbein the Younger and how plague art can be read as a social commentary. I really want to work more with plague art and medieval history and I look forward to having access to more sources on those topics.

  • I am currently using Duolingo to learned French, Welsh, German, Italian, and Norwegian!
I took French in middle and high school and took a year of it in college; I mostly use Duolingo to keep up with it. I started learning Welsh on and off a few years ago, but now because I'm going to be living there for a while I have started practicing it in earnest. German and Italian are super important for art history and I'd like to be able to at least get a general understanding of the languages so that I can stumble through some readings. I decided to start learning Norwegian because my family is from there and we still have family there today!

  • I spent the last year working in the ancient collection room on campus.
While my area of interest isn't really ancient, I loved learning about ancient history and material culture. I got to work with a wide variety of material, may favorites were frescos and coins! I learned all about object handling and photography and even learned the basics of accessioning. I've been lucky enough that I also got to assist in planning exhibits and learn about different professions in the museum field.

I love learning and exploring and I plan on sharing about as much of those things as I can here. I want to keep this blog as a place for me to document how much I grow and change. I want to be able to share my love for history and art and document my journey in the museum/academia field. My biggest goal, that I will spend my whole life pursing, is to make history and art more accessible and palatable to a wider audience. So many people have told me that they don't like either because they never had a good teacher, because they haven't been able to find it interesting, or because they don't understand it. If I can help people get interested in it and give them the resources to be better able to understand it- that would make me so happy!

I have a few links to share:
You can find me on Goodreads here!
You can find a Spotify playlist I made here!
The Picrew I used to make my profile picture here!
And you can find me on instagram at itsonly_anne

I'll leave you for now with the story behind "not that Boleyn girl"-
The nickname I go by, Anne, reminds me of Anne Boleyn. And according to my grandmother, I am related to one of the men on the jury that tried Anne Boleyn! It's a little morbid and a little funny so I thought that it fit me perfectly.

Until next time, keep learning and exploring!
